Cal Polytechnic State University Project

 In the summer of 2007, Mobile Solar Power was awarded a bid from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo to build three solar generators. The university’s plan was to use these generators to power high frequency radar installations along the Central Coast near the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

The radar installations, which are three of several dozen stretching from the Mexican border to Alaska, are part of a larger project called the Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program (COCMP). The program, which is a conglomerate of several organizations including the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Scripps institute of Oceanography, University of California, and the California State University system, condenses ocean current data for easy access and use by other organizations, businesses, and individuals.

According to the COCMP website (www.cocmp.org), the primary function of the organization is to provide information to water quality monitoring agencies. However, the data obtained from the radar sites has several other very important benefits. It helps researchers look at the impact of global warming on ocean currents, prepare for potential oil spills by tracking current flows, and aid the US Coast Guard and maritime shipping vessels by mapping out surface currents.

Getting power to remote locations on the coast is not always easy, which is why Cal Poly, and more recently the University of California at San Diego, made the decision to use solar generators to power their equipment. By storing excess power in the battery bank during sunny days, the four MS-300 Series solar generators positioned along the California coast can provide round-the-clock, reliable power to the radar sites. In addition, the weatherproof interior of the cargo trailers makes a perfect place to keep the sensitive equipment needed to monitor the currents and upload the data from a remote location.

Semmes & Co. Builders typically works on remote jobsites where the local utilities haven’t run electrical lines, so most of the power for corded tools during construction comes from a site generator. But working with gas generators on sites an hour or more from civilization proved to be problematic, says custom builder Turko Semmes. Project managers noticed drawbacks to gas generators, such as sound levels and maintenance. And at least once every week or two no one in the crew would remember to bring the gas for the generator.

Because Semmes installs photovoltaic systems in many of the homes he builds, his company has plenty of experience with that technology. So it wasn’t a great leap for Turko’s son Travis to develop a solar-powered site generator. Built into a small trailer, the company’s Mobile Solar Generator can produce enough electricity to power six to ten workers’ tools, according to Semmes.

They reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by cutting back the amount of fossil fuels burned to produce electricity. Buying a PV system for your office or home also minimizes your dependence on utility power, and the savings you accrue over the twenty or more years of a solar panel’s life can be a wise long-term investment.

When most people hear the word “generator”, they think of a small gas or diesel motor and alternator. While these fossil fuel systems are simple and cheap, they have many drawbacks. A traditional generator must run at all times to provide power, which means that the annoying hum of the internal combustion engine and the output of hazardous gasses such as carbon monoxide are always present. They can be used on farms and ranches to power well pumps. Solar generators can also be charged with a combustion generator or utility power. This gives heavy energy users the option of charging the battery bank before beginning the days work, or using the old fossil fuel generator in conjunction with the solar system.
